In the Canon RF forum people are discussing the use of the Canon 100-500 with TCs on the R5 and it seems to work quite good.

I have a z6 and when the 100-400 S lens will be released I would get one with a T,"c ( most probably the 1.4). Looking at the size of the lens compared to other lenses on the roadmap, most probably the 100-400 will be f5.6 or f6.3 on the long end . Mostly I will use that combo for not movin subjects or big animals .

What is your opinion? Will such a f5.6/f6.3 lens work acceptable on a Z6 with a TC or is there a big difference in AF capabilities between Z6 and R5? ( or Z6 II)

Obviously, this is a thread with not much more than speculation since Nikon is holding facts tightly. Given that, I can't imagine the 100-400 S model lens being anything slower than f/5.6 on the long end. I reach that conclusion based on the F mount 200-500mm being f/5.6 from end to end. Like PLShutterbug, I use that lens, along with the TC 1.4, for completely satisfactory results on my Z7.

My only complaint about the 200-500 is the size and weight, especially coupled with the FTZ on the Z7. It's hand-holdable in good light for short durations. I'm hoping the Z lens 100-400 will be smaller and lighter. With current lenses being so good, I think the 100-400 will be on the same plane. After all, it is an S Line lens. That would make me inclined to replace my 200-500 with the 100-400.

I don't want to sacrifice the extra 100mm on the long end, but the Z model teleconverters are proving to be exceptional. Assuming the 100-400, combined with the 2X tele, gives the image quality I think it might, I'll be all in. Nikon, please don't spoil that with a price tag longer than the lens.
