Lens hoods in winter

I feel a lens hood, especially on a good prime or f2.8 zoom does slightly increase saturation and contrast especially in summer.

Obviously outdoors in blazing summer it's a no brainer.  Also I don't use filters so they stop your front element getting bashed or scratched to some degree too, which is priceless.

How about on a gray overcast English day?  Any benefit in terms of IQ...?
