This is a myth. Even, say, graphics files from 80's home computers can still be opened today as long as the media itself is intact and the format has been at least somewhat widely used rather than one-off homebrewn conception (even those can likely be decoded if you're either a relatively skilled software developer, or get one to figure it out for you). Even data stored to cassette tapes rather than floppies is still often retrievable.

Of more recent examples, I have no trouble at all opening proprietary RAW files from my first digital camera purchased in 2002.
