I am a novice for sure and as I replied to a few others I thought maybe I just lacked an understanding of this camera and why it was defaulting to such high ISO settings.

The higher shutter speed was my doing because my son moves so much and then I would usually do the proper aperture/ISO adjustments on my old camera to compensate for loss of light. With a new camera I think I must just have felt messing with it would produce worse results and I was trying to trust it knew better than me. I'd rather post and be and be patronized. I appreciate the responses from everyone and I am going out at lunch to get some more photos to test.

Thank you again

It sounds like you might just need a basic small zoom lens. I'm about to move from the Z50 to a Z5, body only to save money. I have a few couple third-party lenses that work with full-frame mirrorless , and  lenses from the Z50 (crop sensor kit lenses which are very good) and lenses from my previous crop-sensor D3300 and D3500 which work with the ATZ adaptor. The 16-50 (NIKKOR Z DX 16-50mm f/3.5-6.3 VR) lens that came with the Z50 is a really nice, versatile zoom lens that should work well in most lighting situations and won't destroy your bank account. Of course, you will give away the advantage of the much larger sensor in the Z6 using cropped lenses, so you could go with the 24-70 kit lens that comes with the Z6.
