Monopod vs tripod

Hello all!

I'm considering buying a monopod to use in lieu of my tripod for things like macro/landscape photography (the thinking being that the monopod will be more portable, making me more likely to take it with me). The aim here would simply be to steady the camera enough to make it easier to get the right things in focus (when doing macro) or to shoot at a lower ISO in darker conditions.

I'm aware that a monopod will provide less stability than my tripod overall, but I'm wondering whether it will be enough to allow me to make use of longer-than-average shutter speeds (say, up to 0.5 seconds), or if I'd still need the tripod for those.

Any thoughts?
