My first outing in a while, photographing at our lake...

I didn't realize how much I've missed photographing out in nature. This park/lake is a wildlife habitat, and it was nice to see my favorite shoreline bird, the Snowy Egret; however perched, not fishing.

Two Snowy Egrets and a Great Egret. The tree is a huge Montezuma Cypress, Taxodium mucronatum. Snowy Egrets have black beaks and yellow feet; The Great Egret has a yellow beak and black feet.

The taxonomy of egrets is curious: the Snowy Egret is placed in it own genus, Egretta, but the Great Egret is in the Heron genus, Ardea. In some countries, it is called a White Heron.

All Herons, Egrets, and Bitterns are in the Heron Family, Ardeidae.

A nice pose for this Snowy.

Canada Geese enjoying the lake.

And for some fun, kids feeding American Coots, Fulica americana.

There was a group of American Pelicans, but in shadow. I'll return later and hope to find them in good light.
