Canon Speedlight query

Hi,

I have previously used a Metz hammerhead flash - manual, not dedicated.

I've just bought a Speedlight gun and my experience with other systems is that a dedicated flash will set the highest sync speed automatically.

Am I right in that the Canon, if the camera is set to aperture priority, will still select the shutter speed based on the available light? i.e. the fact you have mounted the flash makes no difference but the flash will adjust the amount of light it throws out?

It seems on fully auto the camera goes to 1/60th regardless (although the highest sync speed is 1/200th).

If I set it to manual I can set 1/200th and say f5.6 and the flash will again adjust automatically to light the scene (but the far background may be underexposed of course).

Is this correct? I have read a manual but it doesn't seem to be clear on this.

TIA.
