Yes, of course they matter. But in the end, it's the lens that produces the final outcome... which would be "picture quality". The contribution of the photographer doesn't really account for much if you're using a lens that's "soft", or does not have a great color rendition. But, if you're using quality, "pro" lenses (not consumer grade), that's giving you tack sharp images, colors that pop, and beautiful bokeh, it's going to make all the difference in the world. And that's my point, it's all about the lens.
