I had this problem a few weeks ago. I use this lens a lot and sent it to the Nikon Service who carried out the repair and returned the lens within 4 days. It cost £189 and works like new. I don't think you have any alternative but to get it professionally repaired.

I am in the UK so it is useful to know what the price might be to have it repaired.  My 200-500 is two years old and has been used quite a lot but fortunately the catch works as new.  I am wondering whether I should refrain from using it as I have never had lens creep.  The lens has never suffered from any impact and it has not been used in wet or dusty environments, if those are contributory factors.
