A few years ago I was tossing up whether to take my Tamron 150-600 to a safari trip in South Africa. I ended up taking my Canon 70-300 L instead, and I'm sure I made the right decision. You can read all about it here.

Canon's 70-300 L is a stellar lens. I haven't used the 100-400 L Mk II but I believe it's as good or better. The Tamrons have moved on since I got mine, but I still would think that the Canon is by far the better choice. I was using full frame and doing a fair bit of cropping, but you'll get plenty of reach with 400 on a crop sensor.

I've also considered the 70-300L, and heard great things about it, but overall I want the longer reach of the 100-400.  As I mentioned, wildlife photography is my hobby and having as much reach as I can get is important.

I had great results with the 100-400 this year so we'll see what happens.
