Third party lens offerings

Hi,

Currently there are no 3rd party lenses available for Nikon Z mount (or for Canon R mount, for that matter). For Sony E mount however there are quite a few lenses available from 3rd party lens manufacturers like Tamron and Sigma.

I'm not familiar with the history of the development of the Tamron's and Sigma's current line-up of glass for Nikon F mount, Canon EF and EF-S mount and Sony E mount.
If they reverse engineered the specs of these mounts, that would explain why there are still no 3rd party lenses for Nikon Z-mount and Canon R-mount. The Sony E-mount has been around for several years and the lens manufacturers would've had enough time to reverse engineer the mount to design and produce glass for it.

But I also wonder if the absence of 3rd party glass for Nikon Z-mount or Canon R-mount might have anything do with patents. Patents that forbid 3rd party glass manufacturers to produce lenses for these newer mounts. Or maybe they would have to pay top dollars for a license to the new mounts and that they've decided, with the current low market penetration of the newer mounts, that its not profitable (enough) at this moment to start producing glass for these mounts.

Can anyone clarify?
