Unfortunately, the closer to a 1:1 magnification you get the shallower the depth of field. I get the best result with a longer lens. Because the angle of view is much less, changes in distance are not as dramatic for the amount of background you get. A 1:2 magnification gives much more depth and looks just as good. With larger insect and spiders a telephoto lens works. I have a Sigma 150 mm macro lens that works well. I also have a NISI close up lens/filter that fits my Sony FE 70-300 mm G lens.

thanks very much for that response.

the option might be then to try for a closeup lens on my Nikon AF-P 70-300 DX lens.

I actually used the 70-300 to photograph a bogong moth (maybe 7cm across) in my house the other night. The moth was on the ceiling and I had the camera/lens on an only partially extended tripod on the floor.

I've also had a bit of success with the 70-300 shooting hoverflies (hovering) and cropping heavily. The AF of the 85micro just couldn't keep up.
