Log Compression in or out ADC?

Some manufacturers offer log compression for video saying that this preserves the camera dynamic range. The sensor is usually read at lower precision and the bits are compressed using a log curve.

I am clear of how the log compression works and the limitations however I am wondering if this log compression is performed inside the sensor ADC and is therefore adding real value or is just digital manipulation ex post which brings no benefit of any sort as the sensor read was already at lower precision

I have tried to find some documentation but found none, log ADC do exist and are common however I wonder how the camera on sensors ADC work and if they can deliver this capability

If anyone has any insight into this I would appreciate
