There are no motorized or mechanized background systems that at "portable"- they are heavy and mount on the ceiling or wall in a permanent studio setup.

For school location shoots, the best setup consists of two light stands and a crossbar with come clams to keep the background material in place.  Someof the kits that I see advertised seem to have rater flimsy stands, You can assemble your own rig with 2 sturdy Manfrotto stands. A crossbar can be made of PVC or ABS plumbing pipe, aluminum, or wooden dowels.

Since I paint my own background, I use black or white window shades and use the window shade core as the crossbar.  I use acrylic paints in 8' wide shades- the last for many years.  I paint on both sides each with a different pattern.
