"Not too expensive." Note that APS-C models have a shutter break every 150.000 shots or so. Repair costs: Euro 150 or more.

Reach: a minimum of 800mm equivalent. A Sony RX-10 with their 600mm is a bit short, in other respects (shooting bursts, electronic shutter, AF for birds in flight) it's fine.

Weight: everything heavier than 1kg is a burden in the field, if you carry it for hours. This point obviously is irrelevant for someone who is shooting only in his garden.

An older model, the Nikon 1V2 + CX 70-300 lens deserves a look. Second-hand it can be inexpensive, maybe Euro 400-600, and would still be an excellent choice for birding.
