How is using the AF-on button different than half press of the shutter?

Hi All,

I’ve got a shiny new A7C and am curious how folks use the AF-On button for selective focus. It’s brilliant how sticky it is when it’s locked on a subject with the real-time tracking but I’m missing how this is any different than using a half-press of the shutter. Could someone explain?

In a perfect world, I wish I could set it so a half press of the shutter used the Wide AF tracking (which selects the most likely subject) while I used the AF-On button as a center AF-C lock.
