Hoarybat - Putting two cameras on a bar is a good start.

To get the lens closer you could try overlapping the cameras on the bar , I guess this would reduce the lens separation from around 100mm to about 70 mm. Another thing to try with some modification to your rig , is to turn one of the cameras upside down. The would result is getting a lens separation of around 60mm. If you want to do 3d macro, you will need to get the lens even closer. I have spent many years looking at ways to do this with my cameras. It usually means building some sort of rig and using mirrors.

Here is a rig I built some years ago - with this rig you can get the lens separation to around 30mm. I have since refined this rig to make it take macro photos/clips. I have added a close-up lens at the front of the rig so that I can focus to closer distances.

Here is a much more complex rig which uses a half-mirror ( also called a beam splitter ). On this rig I can have a lens separation which is adjustable between of 5mm to 20mm. Again I can put a close-up lens at the front of this rig ( both cameras look through this same close-up lens) and have the focus distance at around 200mm from the rig.
