Why color variation?

This is probably a stupid question but why does a change in aperture cause such a color variation?

I was never happy with the first "washed out" moon so tried the smaller aperture and was quite surprised. But why?

O.K., my daughter just informed me it's more exposure than color. I'm red/green color blind so I thought it was color.

Hmm.......nope!  Exposure adjustment didn't produce the same results.  So, again why?
