Is a "tough" SD card really necessary?
1

Sony (and a few others) have a line of "tough" SD cards. Besides having top-of-the-line specs, they are also supposedly better able to withstand the elements and and resistant to breakage.

This sounds great, but is it truly necessary for the extra price (almost double a regular card, even with the same specs other than the tough rating)?

Most of the time, the card sits in the camera, so its not likely to be in contact with the elements or crushed. When its not in the camera, its in an SD card reader and when its not in an SD card reader, usually you have it stored in a SD card case. I happen to have a $10 crush proof water proof case, but even in a regular SD card wallet, how often are you leaving the wallet just out in the open anyway?

I mean, its a great idea, but for $10 you can have a "tough" SD case which protects all your cards.

Even more crazy, Sony has tough CFExpress cards too. How fragile are regular CFExpress cards that there needs to be a tough version?
