K-3 III improvements over KP
7

These improvements will matter to me in the K-3 III, compared to the KP, which is my current camera. Values for KP are in parentheses.

  • AF system and points: SAFOX 13 (11) and 101 (27)
  • AE metering array: 307,000 (86,000)
  • SR: 5.5 (5.0) stops
  • Composition Adjustment range: 1.5 (1.0) mm
  • LCD size and dots: 3.2 (3.0) inches and 1.62M (.921M)
  • Top LCD: yes (no)
  • Viewfinder magnification: 1.05 (.95)
  • GPS: yes (no) [I have seen this stated only implicitly]
  • Battery and battery life: D-LI90 (D-LI109) and 800 (390)
  • Bluetooth: yes (no)
  • USB: 3.2 (2.0), and can be used for battery-charging or powering the camera
  • Card slots: 2 (1)
  • IR Remote control: yes, front and rear (no)
  • Build quality: K-3 class (somewhat lower - e.g., door for battery compartment)

Two specifications are disadvantageous for me: the mass is 820 versus 703 grams, and the LCD monitor doesn't tilt - but those aren't dealbreakers. All of my previous DSLRs had fixed screens, so I'm quite practised in being a contortionist.

Whether the touchscreen, joystick, and some other specification upgrades will matter to me is unknown. I never shoot video, so I already know that 4K is irrelevant to me. And AF speed is basically immaterial to me, too.

Image quality is my overriding concern, and not enough is yet known (factually) about that for me to comment.

Things that I'm glad aren't changing:

  • megapixel count (192 pixels added to 6,000 pixels is insignificant);
  • absence of on-sensor PDAF (avoids striping/IQ issues);
  • third control wheel.

Feel free to identify other improvements that will matter to you. The list above is far from exhaustive.
