wow this is a huge thread.

Electronic Shutter in artificial light = banding.
the default settings on the camera will not allow this to happen.
But yes... it is normal to take a photo with silent shutter on indoors when you don't want your mechanical shutter slapping around.

Overall, compared to other camera manufacturers I've noticed Nikon has your back with automatic shutter selection. In addition to avoiding this, Nikon will kick on EFCS when lower shutter speeds are used in order to reduce shutter shock and will automatically switch to mechanical shutter when faster shutter speeds are used to prevent uneven falloff and avoid trashing your bokeh balls.
