Why would anyone want to risk breaking the camera's usb connector just for charging? Are the external chargers that big and bulky?
I prefer to charge my batteries externally so I can use my camera while a battery is charging (without a cord dangling).
Lots of equipment uses USB charging exclusively (and have done so successfully for years). It's also getting more popular as circuit designs move more in that direction. Many people have multiple PD devices now, and it can be very handy using just one (fast) universal charging system.
Myself, I'm like you most of the time and just swap my batteries in and out of a charger, but it's nice having the other option.

That is exactly how I think about this.
Besides, is better to charge the battery in the open whit the external charger where the heat can dissipate better
Charging the battery inside the M6ii makes it overheat more during the process which is a big contributor to shorten its lifespan.
So charging in camera should be done when there is no other alternative, like if you want to charge while driving or charge two batteries at home in a hurry, etc
That shouldn't be an issue with recent cameras.
It is not about the camera but how rechargeable battery chemistry works.
Li-ion have a limited life span which is related to charging cycles. The reason they degrade over time is mostly due to the high temperatures they endure during charging and usage.
A good practice is to try to keep the temperature as low as you can while recharging and this is better done with the external charger which also charge them slowly.
I have not done any test, but I am sure charging inside the camera, the battery is going to get hotter than with the external charger.
Yes, this is why I always remove my battery from my phone when I charge it.... oh, wait.
There are literally billions of devices with embedded lithium batteries that charge inside the device. Camera batteries are chemically identical to all of these other batteries.
