M vs R mount
1

In a thread which term limited out...we came to a discussion of the M mount, as compared to the R mount.

Assertion: the M mount is optimized for APS-C, and is unique to Canon in this regard.

Reaction: the M mount can be used for both APS-C and FF.

Question: why then a need for R?

Answer1: R allows improved FF lenses, by (I derive) allowing for wider elements to protrude into the mount, thus giving better FF corner results.

Answer2: R allows FF IBIS, by having some room for movement of the sensor.
