Does the Foveon really lack Dynamic Range?

As is claimed here . For the purpose of this thread, I take "lack" to mean "not enough".

How much is "enough" though?

As I sit at my monitor in my normally dim room, it is set quite deliberately to give out about 80 cd/m2 for fully white (255/255) - and it gives out 0.35 cd/m2 for fully black (0/255). The dynamic range presented to my eyes is log2(80/0.35) = 7.8EV. Easy enough to see.

Long ago, Bill Claff tested an SD9 of mine at just over 9EV ... 1.2 EV more than my monitor.

Hmmm ...

I'm waiting for: "only 80 cd/m2? ... OMG!!". Well, I could crank it up to 350 and, assuming the black level stays the same, that would be log2(350/0.35) = 10EV.

But wait - there is some lighting my room which ups the black level without affecting the white so an effective black level to my eyes is more like 1 or more cd/m2.

Hmmm ...

My point is that the Foveon's DR is quite adequate for most people, like it or not.
