Shore birds....testing the Skimmer Ground Pod
6

About a month ago, I purchased a Skimmer Ground Pod. I was reluctant at first, but I am absolutely sold on its functionality for low-angle shots. I did a brief test at a local park right after purchasing it, and it did very well on squirrels and various birds. But last weekend, I truly got to see what it was made of! I was on Galveston Island for a few days with the family and I spent approximately 2-3 hours on my belly over the course of two days, mostly photographing Sanderlings (which are tiny little birds, about the size of a wren or sparrow, but they never stop moving!)

The Skimmer Ground Pod was truly a game-changer for this type of photography. There is simply no way anyone could comfortably sit on their stomach for that long with a long lens setup, and stay steady for shooting, without something like the ground pod. Before I bought it, I was also considering the Platypod.....but after last weekend, I realized I would not have been satisfied with it. I was constantly adjusting positions on the sand, and the ground pod is very easy to push/pull around wherever you need it. I think I would have been very frustrated with anything else.

Here are a few highlights from last weekend. These are all Sanderlings, Sandpipers, and Gulls. Personally, these are the best shore-bird shots I have ever taken, and I think mostly the ground pod is the reason. All were taken with my Nikon D500 and 500mm F/4G ED VR. There were times when the Sanderlings actually came too close to focus on. I hope you guys enjoy.
