Thanks for that great comparison. It sounds like the M50 is an improvement in performance and AF, but a step back in the physical controls and custom settings. I'll see what happens with the M50II pricing at the holidays, since it does sound like the M50 is going to stay out of stock.

Canon's known for being out of stock of something just up to the holidays, and then suddenly, bang, in stock on a firesale "refurbished". You've been warned. It happens btw in November, right around the corner. And it doesn't have to be black friday. Cyber Monday and the week after Xmas have seen some crazy sales by Canon USA the past few years. But, we've also seen good deals running from about the 3rd week of November through New Years in the past. Don't worry about it, keep waiting.

For the M5 firmware, I did update that in the spring and didn't see any improvement in the lag. I don't know if somehow I'm missing something else or if it's also tied to some specific settings though? Does seem like there just isn't enough processing power in the M5.

There isn't. DIGIC7 was essentially obsolete the moment it hit the market. DIGIC8 on the other hand, still holds its ground.

I'd imagine the M50II would have a decent upgrade in processing power over the M50 to live stream to YouTube without issues. When livestreaming services at my church to YouTube we used to have huge lag issues until we upgraded to a PC with a high-powered processor and graphics card and boom - problem solved.

So DIGIC processors use a subset of instructions a computer does permitting it to be substantially more efficient at what it does; it's not a full CISC like an x86 processor in your PC. They have dedicated x264 processing, like your smartphone I gather.

BTW, have a hard look at those Youtube requirements on the *

I seem to recall for the G7X Mark III at least, you needed 1000 subscribers or something like that, to actually use the feature. That may have changed. Double check that if that's of interest.

BTW, if the church is indoors, which it probably will be, have a hard look at the price difference. The M50 Mark II does down to -4EV on AF vs the -2EV of the M50. That may be of interest as usually you're shooting these sort of venue's with indoor lighting.

If the M5 is doing the job already though, the M50 will more than enough. It's a pretty large step up in video, but, that battery life becomes a concern... Choices...
