Cable extension DIY?

Hi,
Some of the light heads that are fed from powerpacks or even go on camera with twisty coiled cords and such have very short cords.

Anyone has cut them and tried extending by interposing cable lenght?

Is there anything special about those cords? I mean if I see two or three wires I will insert 2 or 3 wire extension, will everything be ok?

Sort of like how people do their own home extension cord by cutting and splicing regular electric lines?

Or are there dedicated extension cords one can use in these situations?

I am talking about these flat thick multiprong plugs that go into powerpacks especially, what are they conducting to the light other than a charge and why would they need so many electric contact points? The only thing at the other end is the filament, nothing 'electronic', only electric, so why the need?

Educate me please before I cut the cord, LOL.
