Hi everyone! Looking for some advice here....
I've been a Canon DSLR user for quite some time, as an advanced amateur that plays around with the idea of making money with this photography stuff while mostly just taking great pictures of my family. I upgraded from an older Rebel XS to the M5 later last year - and it was a HUGE upgrade in almost every way. I don't really do much at all with video - heck it wasn't even an option on my old Rebel. There's some things I've really enjoyed about the M5 and some things that have surprised and frustrated me about the M5 -
The good -
- Multiple control dials
- C1 and C2 settings on the PASM mode dial
- MUCH more customization options compared to the Rebel (which was nearly zero)
The bad -
- Less ability to pinpoint where you want to focus unless you switch over to One Spot AF. I typically use Servo with back button AF to keep up with things that just won't stay in one spot (!).
- The extreme shutter lag - sometimes it's there and sometimes it's not! A surprise coming from a Rebel
Overall the move to mirrorless has been great, and the 'bad' side of the M5 makes me happier I didn't try to move over with earlier generations of M's.
Hey, my own switch from DSLRs to mirrorless was to the M5 (since it was the first model to sport Dual Pixel AF). I indeed liked everything about it except the Autofocus!
Those couple of negatives have had me wondering about other bodies that would help there without sacrificing the positives. Really, if that M5II would show up that's basically an M6II with an EVF and IBIS I'd be all over it.
If you’re considering doing any gigs for pay, get the M6 Mark II. Don’t even hesitate. It’s a HUGE jump over the M5, ESPECIALLY in the area of autofocus. The M6ii will AF in light lower than I can see. It’s ultra-quick and it sticks like glue. Eye and Face Detect AF is just amazing, even from the side. Its AF is better than any DSLR I’ve ever used (including the vaunted 7D2).
The M6ii has all the controls of the M5 plus a whole lot more. That back AF button alone is worth the price of admission! I do really think you’d find the M50ii’s relative lack of controls frustrating (would be for me).
I personally don’t mind the M6ii’s EVF, but I’m one who especially likes to use the back LCD for composing. So the times I need to use the hotshoe for flash or radios, I’m not inconvenienced at all. That’s the only time there’d be a hotshoe conflict.
You make a VERY convincing case for the M6II! That matches many of my expectations.
It’s just that waiting for an M5ii is fruitless. Like I’ve said many times, I’d love to be wrong about this (I’d buy one in a heartbeat), but IMHO Canon won’t make one because it would compete directly with the R Series. The M6ii’s performance is already remarkably close to the R5 and R6 in many areas.
It's just that I use the EVF probably 60% of the time and use off camera flash enough that losing it would be an issue.
Gotcha. I’ve tried to convince myself to get an M50ii, but alas.
The M6II doesn't have wireless flash triggering built in does it? I know the last few xxD's had been getting that...
I use radios on my M6ii, but IIRC there isn’t any built-in wireless flash control. You’d have to verify though.
