D810 and 50mm F/1.4 - Focussing Tips for Portraits

Hi all,

Attending my first portrait photo workshop this coming weekend - been practicing shooting wide open on a 50mm F/1.4, and noticed that my focus technique is not great. I'm used to shooting landscapes and manually focusing using live view or using single AF-S back button for street photos.

I'm trying to keep my shutter speed faster than 1/250, and using AF-S. I feel i should probably switch the shutter release button to Focus+Release for portraits. Does this make more sense? I've also tried the AF-C face detect mode and don't really fancy it.

Does anyone have any useful tips for getting a higher hit rate trying to focus on the eye?

Many many thanks
