The 16/2.8 does indeed have strong barrel distortion and unless you disable it, it is auto-corrected in-camera or PP.

The real question is : How good or bad is it after correction? Chris Frost's reviews are generally worthy of respect, but go back to these two photos...... I posted them for just such a comparison. What do YOU see in them? Most people here seem to think they aren't very far apart - some slightly better, some slightly worse - and not one person has been specifically critical of the corners of this image from the 16/2.8. (Valdai21, below, has posted that they can see a difference in the borders and corners in images from their pair of 16mm lenses and that their f1.4 is the better lens on 24mpx, but made no critical reference to these two images.  Unfortunately I'm limited to 16mpx.)

FWIW, the 16-55 also has very strong barrel distortion at 16mm when uncorrected, yet that's the brand's premium zoom. The correction can work very well.
