Why LOG hasn't been used from the beginning?

Well, after the discussions with the digital video experts (like Markr041) about the Log and Lut, I am just wondering, why for the digital imaging such a logarithmic processing of the light hasn't been used right the way. For the voice processing, the corresponding compressions (like mju law) are used (almost) from the beginning of the digital voice processing, but not for the image processing. And there have been amplifiers with the logarithmic transfer function, even the A/D converters already having such logarithmic characteristics easily available. Imagine that your RAW images (12-14 bit wide) would be already captured such a way! How much more details could be captured in the darkest areas! Maybe there is still a time for such implementation.
