This is the “best practice” that I learned and follow — Format the card in the device you intend to write (record) with. It contradicts the suggestion made at the top of this thread. The exception is that I have used a computer to perform a low-level format on a “bad” card, but I then re-format the card in the camera before use.  However, the more hoops I have to jump through the more likely I am to just bin the card and replace it with one that isn’t giving me problems. Why ask for trouble?  (Fortunately, since switching to SD family cards I genuinely can’t recall having any issues — touch wood.)
