A fly, an ichneumon wasp, and a basic question

Still working on the basics - I was trying manual focus, rocking backwards and forwards as I shot in machine-gun mode, using a 55-250 zoom with an extension. Today's lesson - with a zoom, even at f16, depth of field can be shallow enough that I miss the perfect shot if I move in and out too quickly - and I should have upped the iso as my bees were all fuzzy.

Question: would a Raynox macro adapter work better than an extension tube? I'm not going down the macro lens route just now as I want to be ready to skip from close to to further away depending on what I spot.
