Macro with extension tubes

I am very tempted by these adapters with an helicoid to take close-up photos with non-macro lenses. But what about the resulting image quality?

- Which lenses in the range of, say, 35 to 135mm, will give good results?

- I think that symmetrical optical formulas should give good result. Could someone confirm this?

- I eared - but don't know why - that large aperture lenses are inadequate for macro. True or False?

- And I wonder if lenses with floating elements are good or bad when used on an extension tube at their minimum focus distance?
