And the answer from Canon is simple...

Dear Mr. Tanev,

Thank you for your email and for contacting Canon.

Your ticket has been escalated to me at the customer service and complaints team.

I am sorry to hear that you are not happy with one of the design changes made to the Canon 250D, we apologise for any disappointment or inconvenience caused by this change.

We make every effort to ensure that our products and services meet, and wherever possible exceed, the expectations of our customers. Consequently, we value all customer feedback and would like to thank you for bringing this matter to our attention.

After liaising with the technical team, they have confirmed the pin that we believe that you are referring has been removed due to business reasons, the design was changed to remove the centre pin which we are unable to share any information on is to why.

If I were to guess, it could be any of 4 things.

1. To lock customers into buying a Canon flash unit.

2. To reduce cost simply on circuitry.

3. To reduce the cost of cameras coming back because someone hooked up a really old flash unit with a really high trigger voltage. Rather then deal with the downside of arguing with customers, just remove the source of the issue.

And probably a percentage thing.

4. There are probably a lot of people that buy this camera that never get around to buying an external flash unit.

In which case, the CONs of including that center pin out weight the PROs of including it.

Unfortunately, for those that want to then go on to use external flash, they must get a modern flash unit. (And I am assuming Canon hopes that it will be a Canon flash unit.) Or they must move up to a higher model that has it.

Strangely enough, this reminds me of when people ask for video not to be included in order to keep the cost down because they don't want video. Here's a case where there is a more cost effective camera, but it doesn't include the center pin. For people that don't use it, it's great that its a more cost effective camera!

Take care & Happy Shooting!

Due to the design change it does mean that some 3rd party flash units will not work form this camera when using the flash mount, however you can still use the inbuilt flash to trigger the external flash.
