"Best use of the image circle" only applies if you're not going to crop later. For example, an APS-C sensor is 23.5x15.6mm, but a square with the same diagonal is 19.9x19.9mm. If you cropped that square you'd only end up with 19.9x13.3mm.

So, make the sensor 23.5 x 23.5.

I was just about to say that!

The image circle didn't reach the corners of the sensor, so you choose which crop you want.

The lens and sensor were so good that this worked very well indeed.
Even in dim light; I never used the supplied clip-on flash.
