Re: Purchasing a R6 and very confused about cards and lenses

Regarding the 70-200mm lens, I would recommend not going for the RF or EF F2.8L zoom, and getting one of the EF 70-200 F4 variants instead. The F2.8L ones are very nice, but too expensive and (in case of EF) bulky, such that I’m afraid you may find them overspec’ed for your needs as an amateur.

For F4 you have the following choices:

  • EF 70-200F4L IS II: the best of the bunch, and the most expensive
  • EF 70-200F4L IS : cheaper, very recently discontinued, still very good
  • EF 70-200F4L : cheaper still, very recently discontinued, IQ close to par with the IS version; it lacks stabilization, but your R6 conveniently has in-body stabilization
  • Tamron 70-210F4 : as cheap as the unstabilized 70-200F4L; this lens was getting rave reviews when it came out a couple of years ago, but as it is a third-party lens, you should solicit testimony about how well it works with the R6
  • RF 70-200F4? : rumored to be coming this year or next year. You can wait for it, but the problem is that a lens that isn’t in your hands isn’t going to produce photos for you.
