What is a viewfinder for / what's important to you?

Soooo, we've seen a lot of conversations about the merits of optical viewfinders versus electronic viewfinders that turned into knock-down drag-out fights. I've also heard people praise the viewfinders of some cameras (Nikon FE, for example) that I don't care for.

Maybe the difference is that we look to the viewfinder for different things?

So I thought that'd be an interesting question to put out there. What are you looking for your viewfinder to do?

For me, the VF is primarily to frame the scene (duh). Since I'm generally shooting in ap-priority mode on my digicam, I'd like to know basic exposure information; when shooting film I need to be able to see the meter, and shutter/ap information is helpful. With digital, it's nice to get some idea of exposure and WB, so an EVF is nice. And I prefer a smaller view so I can see it all at once without having to look around in the viewfinder -- the Nikon FE cited above is just too big a screen.

What is important to you in a viewfinder?
