I would think that they'd want to stay with 1.6X for compatibility reasons as you state - EF-S glass for example - and also for parts-interchangeablilty with the M-series lineup. That is to say, the 32 mpx sensor in the M6 II could also be used in an R-series body so there'd be no need to make different sensors. Some of the electronics could be duplicated as well.

I realize that some think that the M series should go away, but it's a very practical, inexpensive, small format. Almost like a Rebel series in a way.
