Does the R battery grip firmware update work properly?

I've updated the firmware in my R battery grip from 1.0.1 to 1.1.0.

This was so I could use the new LP-E6NH batteries in the battery grip.

After the upgrade, I can use such batteries in the R battery grip. But ...

When I try to charge the batteries while still in the grip (on the camera) using the appropriate Canon-provide charger supplied with the battery grip, even after an hour or two with the "charging" light on, the batteries appear to have zero charge.

If take the batteries out of the grip and use the stand-alone charger, it initially indicates zero charge, then successfully charges the batteries as usual.

Am I missing something important?

Equipment:
Canon R, firmware 1.7.0
Canon R battery grip, firmware 1.1.0
LP-E6NH batteries.
