The 50mm primes are garbage
Actually I’ve seen some excellent (later) copies of the EF 50mm f/1.4 (lacking those copious amounts of halation). They are rare however. Never was lucky enough to get one.
The EF 50mm f/1.8 STM is a very well-behaved lens and a lot of fun to shoot. It’s not the sharpest of lenses though, and lacks a bit of character.
The EF 50mm Compact Macro is Very sharp, but it’s not the quickest lens.
At some point i just get a bit bored to write down all the nuances, so i wrapped it up with the descriptor "garbage".
For 50mm the Canon line up isn't complete, that's my point. What everybody wants for YEARS now is a lens like the EF IS primes series (24&28mm f/2.8 & 35mm f/2.0), but Canon stopped after the 35mm f/2.0, leaving in a very Canonesque stubborn way a very annoying gap there, and it would be really nice if that problem would be finally solved with an RF 50mm prime being better than that EF stm.
In this context i found it also annoying Canon started the RF line up with that 35mm, while that one wasn't needed so bad as the EF 35mm is good enough, while the EF 50mm options are certainly not.
So there is a bit more nuance, but if I wrap it up looking for words i still have zero problems with the descriptor "garbage". If you really think Canon offers a complete lens line up you're not living on my planet, sorry.
Never owned the EF 50mm f/1.2L, but if there was one RF L Prime for me, it would be the new RF 50mm f/1.2L. Wow what a lens.
It's very nice, but there's also a demand for slower and more compact primes yet performing very good. I don't want to carry around f/1.2 always, especially not at the 50mm focal length.
and there's no 105mm.
Technically true, but don’t forget the venerable EF 100mm f/2 (twin to the 85/1.8). Shares the same faults though!
Very prone to produce fringing, although not so extremely bad as the 50mm f/1.4 "USM".
All the 85mm options suffer from fringing more than they should. I'm not saying it's a bad line up,
LOL except for that “garbage” part.
Yeah, I just hate that 50mm gap. I hate it almost as much as the auto ISO implementation of the 70D.
I know, I know. It’s all relative.
but without Sigma there are definitely holes in whole (EF+RF) Canon full frame lens line up.
Sigma certainly has augmented the whole Canon experience. No doubt.
There's at least one person in this world getting my point.
