I seem to remember the original iPod ad said something like "A thousand songs in your pocket"? That would eat up the 5GB I think.

A standard audio CD can hold up to 74 minutes of stereo – but most albums (other than classical and greatest hits albums) run about 45 – 50 minutes.

50 minutes of songs encoded in 128 Kbps MP3 or AAC format would take up 48 MB – so on a 5 GB iPod, there is enough room for 100 albums at 128 Kbps (not counting OS and file system overhead). That probably would translate to about 1,000 to 1,200 songs.

These days, with devices having higher capacity, one can afford to use 192 – 320 Kbps or Apple Lossless encoding for most songs.

I used to use 256 kbps AAC because I couldn't tell the difference between that and a CD track ... though I hasten to add, that was playing them through a G5 iMac's speakers! Now I tend to use 192 AAC but I also use the application Hear which expands the soundstage of the Mac's speakers considerably.
