Black Skimmer Blastoff at 12mm
3

This is a work in progress as there is much to be learned to get a quality image. Usually one would think 1/shutter speed would stop motion blurring yet this is hardly he case when the subject is moving at 50 MPH and 10 feet from your lens. 1/500 seems to be the minimum and 1/1000 a better choice. Then there are the usual compositional challenges of shooting a landscape at 12mm and the need for the wildlife to cooperate. There is usually a blast off about once an hour that is caused by a bird sensing a thread and ordering the colony into the air. The photos presented here are a hint of where I'm going and I felt they are interesting enough to post.

-1 All the birds in the air

-2 Self portrait with the colony in the background. Many of the about one thousand skimmers are out fishing

-3 15 minutes before sunset. They did not fly in circles which is what they do for defense. This blastoff was to move from the nesting area to the shoreline where many spend the night. When there are more chicks it is possible to get a defensive circle in magic light. This is where I'm heading and I suspect it will be next year for me to capture this.

Comments and suggestions welcome,

Morris
