Panasonic Cameras - "Change Focal Length Setting" window

Just wanted some clarification on this. When using a manual focus lens on a Panasonic body, the camera asks if you need want to "change the focal length setting" from 35mm. I understand that this is because these lenses don't have electronic contacts with camera, so the camera doesn't know the focal length. Do i actually have to dial in the focal length of the lens?

I don't think this is required for the correct FOV, as the FOV seems correct even without setting it. Apparently, this is only for the IBIS. So what happens if i don't change it, and instead just half press the shutter to continue operating the camera? Would the IBIS be less effective? Why was this never necessary for Olympus bodies?
