Re: Petition Fuji, give us 4:3, 5:4, and 6:7 aspect ratios on X-series cameras

Case in point: the OP wants the option of additional aspect ratios. But he can't just ask for them. He has to state that the existing options are inferior:

The 3:2 aspect ratio is a weird invention by Oskar Barnack: it should have been forgotten for good with the first digital bodies, but unfortunately camera companies insisted on it as the de facto standard for the industry.

Hi Dennis,

The definition of weird, according to the Cambridge Dictionary (not a native English speaker, so I double checked it) is “very strange and unusual, unexpected, or not natural”: whether you agree or not it doesn’t matter, since it fits perfectly the way Oskar Barnack came up with the 3:2 aspect ratio (it’s an historical fact, not my opinion).

There’s two categories of photographers:

those who prefer the larger and more elegant aspect ratios
those who never tried them"

So it's not just a petition which he's asking you to sign or ignore; it's also a statement that what he's asking for is better and if you don't agree, you're wrong.

Concerning the “two categories of photographers” bit: it’s called hyperbole (“the use of exaggeration as a rhetorical device or figure of speech”).

(How far do you think this petition would get at Fuji, telling them that their choice of 3:2 is an unfortunate mistake and that aspect ratios they don't offer are superior to ones they do offer and they'd realize that if only they bothered to try them).

You’re right, I doubt this petition will get very far at Fuji: only thing they seem receptive to lately is praise from their ambassadors and youtubers friends.
I wrote it with barely any hope of any practical results, mainly to put it out of my mind.

They know pretty well that the 3:2 aspect ratio is mediocre and they themselves will tell you :

“This is the native aspect ratio of sensors in X Series cameras, as well as the vast majority of other digital cameras out there. Since 3:2 is the default aspect ratio that most photographers use without even thinking about it, it’s very familiar to us.
In some ways, the 3:2 ratio is jack-of-all-trades, master of none. It’s plenty long enough to get everything in and doesn’t give excessive white space – though there’s nothing extraordinary about it, and some photographers view it as being a little too wide for their tastes. Nevertheless, this is a safe bet and a good fit for common print/frame sizes, like 4x6in.”
Sounds exciting doesn’t it.

I think many posts go hostile because internet makes very easy for people to concentrate at the finger pointing at the moon, and ignore the moon (= the fact the what I’m asking is basically already in the camera and won’t take away anything from your life, a part from the time wasted commenting this thread).
Moreover, the amazing thing is that nobody forces anybody to sign anything, but still people feel the need to comment (angrily, not talking about you Dennis) on the issue without even understanding how the in camera crop works.

Cheers
