Need help on a corrupted hard drive.

The hard drive on my wife's laptop went "kaput".

As usual, she didn't heed to my warnings to back (all) things up and there are files in there she needs.

I uninstalled the drive, put a new one in and am re-installing Windows as I write.

I have an 2.5 drive USB cradle, so I installed the old drive there and connected to my Windows 10 PC.

It connects, the blue access light on the cradle illuminates, and a window pops-up in my desketop showing it as a valid drive, with a new letter and the properties showing it's size and how much space is left but then the system hangs and does not provide further access.

The partition is probably damaged or even erased and I would like to use TestDisk to recover what might be recoverable.

However, since it keeps indefinitely in the initial access phase, TestDisk also keeps indefinitely updating the drive list and I cannot proceed.

Any ideas on how to move forward before trying a professional recovery service would be appreciated.

Thanks.

PK
