Composing a Scene: Rule of Thirds

Hello folks,

It's obviously a topic that's been talked about to near-death.. but since I've recently joined, I would like to open a conversation about shot composition.

Do *you* consciously think in 'rule of thirds' when lining up a sunject through the lens ?

My camera has a Rule of Thirds overlay on the LCD screen which can be toggled on/off, but I've been trying to get into the habit of using the eyepiece, which doesn't have the overlay. So I just think a little about what's in the frame, and whether it is 'balanced'.

I must admit, I'm composing with the idea that I can do some very intentional cropping in post-production, in that I allow some breathing room.
But can the rule of thirds be taken too literally ? Does it make an image *too* balanced, and perhaps then lacking imagination ?

And what of the 'golden ratio' ? There is some merit to this layout. Pretty sure my camera or ACR has that overlay !
