A wireless charger works exactly the same way as a wired one - except wirelessly.

This is not correct. They do NOT work exactly the same way. The wireless charging uses electromagnetic induction that with a time-varying magnetic field induces a current in a closed loop of wire. So, instead of direct charging we have two more steps involved in this process: one is transforming electricity in electromagnetic field, and then another reversing that field to electricity. Because there is no ideal conversion, the dissipation (loss of energy) is manifested as a heat. Eventual incorrect charging from the phone system + heat from the wireless charger are the reason for overheating the battery. That is exactly what I have experienced with my Samsung phone replacing 3 batteries in 4 years. Now I am using wired charger and I don't have any overcharging problems. Now the phone and battery are not even worm after full charge.
