It's not about holding back in photography, it's about holding back for upgrading the current M50 or not.

Sometimes camera companies make incremental upgrades, that are designed to appeal to first-time buyers, rather than upgraders. They prefer that upgraders upgrade to a more expensive model.

If it's no upgrade the original model appeals just as much. With that strategy they will sell less. Again: same sensor and same processor makes no sense.

most don't upgrade at every model ..

Yup. And an M50mkII with the same 24Mp sensor and the same digic8 processor would be the one to skip.

i bet you can't find many that has had more than 4 bodys starting with the 20D to the 90D..most will get every other or upgrade to a higher range. ..if you put to much in a lower camera why will folk buy the flagship ...you just want a top camera at M50 price ...that's not good business sense

The current M50 is value for money, but AF tracking intelligence, dynamic range and iso2noise ratio could be improved.

As for the DSLRs i think every model from the 60D on (don't know about models before this one) was worth the upgrade from the former model.

50D

upgrade will give: higher Mp count, 15 in stead of 10, flippy screen

the 50D did not get a fippy screen it was the same body as the 40D the 50D was the last of the semi pro XXD camaras with the AF joystick and the mag ally body ..IQ was not much of a upgrade .. it appears to have a very strong AA filter...at the time i showed using DXO and 3ed party lenses the said lenses had a better sharpness score on all the 12MP nikon bodys and only had the tiny edge over the 40D and a littler more over the 20/30D definitely not almost double resolution better (40D also has a stronger AA filter than the 20/30D but weaker than the 50D)

the 40D had nicer looking photos than the 50D and also the 20/30D had nicer phots than the 40D ..i had a 20D i take a 40D in payment for some work ....ithe 40D was an upgrade in many way except the look of the photos so sold the 40D but that's another story (that i will tel if asked)

60D

upgrade will give: DPAF, higher Mp count, 20 in stead of 15, 19 Af points in stead of 9

the 60D body was a downgrade and not a semi pro body but an enthusiast body ..it is now made out of plastic and lost the AF joystick ..this is becos canon split the lines and introduced the 7D with better AF and a mag ally body with joystick ..the 60D lost a lot of stuff like PC socket and the ability to control multi flash guns no AF micro adjust ..lower FPS to name a few ho and it was 18MP but had a nice output ..the 1st real upgrade since the 20/30Din output it also still had only 9AF point from the 20D!!!!! you had to upgrade to the the 7D for 19AF points and no PDAF yet

70D

upgrade will give: higher Mp count, 24 in stead of 20, 45 AF points in stead of 19, much better auto ISO implementation

the 70D is now 20MP and 19AF points and has DPAF it now has 7FPS and is the 1st xxd camera to top the 40D for FPS albeit by only 0.6 and still the same sensor tech as all the old xxD with now poor DR campers to the competition

80D

ist proper sensor upgrade since the 20D with onboard DAC and much better DR also has 45 AF points

upgrade will give: the 32Mp sensor, return of the joystick

90D

so you see the xxD upgrade path was never obveras when the 7D was introduced ..if you wanted to retain the semi pro body you would not get the 60D

i had the 20D and was waiting for the 60D to upgrade but when it came out decided i didn't want a downgraded dody a got a second hand 5Dmki

so in realty from the 20D we only ever got tiny upgrades mixed in with considerable down grades we never got sensor and AF and shooting performance upgrade in 1 body ever..

from my 20D i would say the 1st body that upgraded everything like AF and sensor and FPS with 2fps more was not till the 70D ..60D had the same AF the 70D still had a plastic body no joystick and no PC socket

Of course there are debatable upgrades:

M5 to M50 or M6mkII: both upgrades can come (depending on preferences) with downsides.

when i buy my M5 the 6mkii was not out but no EVF is a deal breaker..i chose the M5 over the M50 because of the controls evan throw the M50 has better AF ...i did flirt with fuji and i found the EC dial next to my thumb and a histogram overly changed the way i shoot so wont buy a MILC without that

6D to 6DmkII: your getting more way AF points, but still very cluttered in the middle, hardly suitable for rule of thirds compositions.

but you get DPAF for video also 60fps, AF works in way lower light better ISO Canons touch interface its smaller.. flapy LCD faster FPS more snappy operation

EOS R to R6: al lot of appealing improvements, but a downgrade as it comes to Mp.

MP is the only downgrade ..every other metric has been vastly improved

There is no argument for FF vs APS-c (or m43) with shallow DOF..as it's a law of physics and a very subjective personal thing if you want to make use of the shallow DOF only FF can offer
