It's not about holding back in photography, it's about holding back for upgrading the current M50 or not.

Sometimes camera companies make incremental upgrades, that are designed to appeal to first-time buyers, rather than upgraders. They prefer that upgraders upgrade to a more expensive model.

If it's no upgrade the original model appeals just as much. With that strategy they will sell less. Again: same sensor and same processor makes no sense.

most don't upgrade at every model ..

Yup. And an M50mkII with the same 24Mp sensor and the same digic8 processor would be the one to skip.

i bet you can't find many that has had more than 4 bodys starting with the 20D to the 90D..most will get every other or upgrade to a higher range. ..if you put to much in a lower camera why will folk buy the flagship ...you just want a top camera at M50 price ...that's not good business sense

The current M50 is value for money, but AF tracking intelligence, dynamic range and iso2noise ratio could be improved.

As for the DSLRs i think every model from the 60D on (don't know about models before this one) was worth the upgrade from the former model.

50D

upgrade will give: higher Mp count, 15 in stead of 10, flippy screen

60D

upgrade will give: DPAF, higher Mp count, 20 in stead of 15, 19 Af points in stead of 9

70D

upgrade will give: higher Mp count, 24 in stead of 20, 45 AF points in stead of 19, much better auto ISO implementation

80D

upgrade will give: the 32Mp sensor, return of the joystick

90D

Of course there are debatable upgrades:

M5 to M50 or M6mkII:  both upgrades can come (depending on preferences) with downsides.

6D to 6DmkII: your getting more way AF points, but still very cluttered in the middle, hardly suitable for rule of thirds compositions.

EOS R to R6: al lot of appealing improvements, but a downgrade as it comes to Mp.
